Those who know me, know that I studied psychology as well as Design and even though I don't work in anything related to psychology, I often go back to it to make sense of things that happen around me. A couple of weeks ago I went to the Climate strike in London and I felt inspired by thousands of young people who were protesting for our planet. I thought about what it is that provokes a real change, what is the reason why thousands of people would strike for climate change. There needs to be something unpleasant that triggers a change, something that doesn't work with our beliefs or attitudes. That's when I realised how important it is for us, people who work in the communication industry to keep making this problem visible. One of the psychological theories that could explain why people join movements is "Cognitive dissonance" which refers to a situation involving conflicting attitudes, beliefs or behaviours. This produces a feeling of mental discomfort leading to a change in one of the attitudes, beliefs or behaviours to reduce the discomfort and restore balance. I decided to create a set of graphic posters that explore the psychological concept of cognitive dissonance.
